After a top meal with waiters and waitresses dressed straight out of a period drama at a restaurant resembling a palace we headed out to Red Square. The illuminated building running along one side of the square is GUM, once Moscow's most luxurious shopping mall.
At the north end of the square is a museum and at the south end St. Basils Cathedral, the architects of which were said to have been blinded by Ivan the Terrible to prevent them ever building anything like it again.
I returned the following day to see inside the Kremlin but it was closed on Thursdays so I strolled around checking the shops and public spaces. It wasn't closed on Fridays so second time lucky. The Kremlin contains various government buildings, three cathedrals
and the Tsar Bell and bell tower of Ivan the Great. The most impressive part for me was inside the cathedrals but photos weren't allowed so you'll have to visit yourselves.
